It’s time to prepare for whatever comes this winter – it could even be freezing, icy weather, just like a couple of years ago. Winterizing your home calls for checking out your roof’s status.
Here are some things that need to be done:
All that debris that landed on your roof this past summer needs to be cleaned off – all those leaves, twigs, children’s toys, bird’s nests, etc.
Your gutters need debris cleaned out, too, in order to prevent dams that keep the water from draining off your roof.
If you have tree branches overhanging your roof, you need to hire someone to trim them back to avoid them being blown into your roof during one of our fierce Texas storms.
The flashing around chimneys, vents, pipes, dormers and skylights need to be checked for damage. If it’s loose, or the calk has cracked, get it repaired. These are perfect spots to develop leaks.
Your attic needs checking out for water-damage, or cracks in the roof caused by rodents or birds that have invaded and taken up residence.

Are you prepared for the onslaught of hailstorms, windstorms, (perhaps even snowstorms) this winter, and the scorching sun next summer?
Whatever the weather, cracked or broken shingles on your roof means it isn’t healthy, and it won’t protect you and your family from the extremes of hot and cold that will hit us sometimes here in the Houston area. Does that mean you need a whole new roof if you have damaged shingles? Not unless the damage is extensive.
Shingles can be damaged by thermal expansion, causing both splitting and cracking. But splitting and cracking are different problems. Splitting occurs when the layers in the shingle separate and expand with the temperature when it rises, and then contract when the temperature goes back down. Eventually, the shingle tears and comes apart, leading to leaks in your home.
Another type of damage to shingles usually occurs with regular wear and tear. It’s called cracking, and the damage is more shallow, creating small tears on the surface of the shingle.
Split shingles, the more dangerously damaged shingles, need replacing because they can lead to pathways for large leaks in your home. Cracked shingles, in contrast, simply need filling in the cracks. Since it’s obviously cheaper to repair or replace a couple of shingles, rather than the whole roof, you need to be on the ball in making sure repairs are done expeditiously whenever your shingles are damaged to avoid greater problems.

Have you heard of the guy who drove by a house every day that looked like it was smiling at him, with a roof that sagged up and down around the edges, and shingles that looked like blotchy eyes that didn’t match? Gutters divert rainwater away from your roof, walls and the foundation of your home, preventing stained siding on the outside of your house, water seeping down interior walls, puddles on your floors, and water damage to your foundation. So, gutters really are necessary!
When properly installed and maintained, gutters will prevent all these problems. But, when they get clogged up and rain can’t drain off your roof, the structure of your roof will be weakened, and the wood under the roofing will rot away, providing openings for critters of all types to build nests and nuzzle into corners for protection against the weather. Who’s going to put up your outdoor holiday lights this year – you, your nephew, niece, or grandkids? Remember those who aren’t experts with the proper safety precautions for working on roofs and with electrical equipment may be in danger of an accident.
Make sure whoever does the job understands the following tips for keeping them and your home safe during the season:
– Check out all of the light strands before climbing up on the roof. Make sure everything’s in working order. Replace burnt-out bulbs with those of the same wattage, and check out the wires for fraying or other damage.
– Get rid of antiquated strands and lights. New ones are safer, because they have fused plugs that protect you from fire.
– Clear out leaves and debris from off the roof to avoid a fire.
– Use insulated materials rather than nails and screws to position the lights – sharp edges can fray wires and cause fires.
Follow rules for ladder safety:
– Set up ladders on sturdy, dry, level ground, away from power lines, obstructions and doorways. Avoid rocky, loose or slippery substances like wet grass.
– Wear shoes that won’t slip and make sure the ladder rungs are not wet or covered with debris.
– Never climb a ladder backwards, turn around on it, or shift your weight to reach something.
– Never climb to the highest rung.
– Climb down and move the ladder when necessary in order to reach something. Don’t overreach.
