Your roof is above you, protecting your home every day, but most people don’t give it another thought unless there’s a problem. Your roof is your first line of defense against wind, rain, snow, hail and heat. Every day your roof is exposed to various weather hazards and other elements which contribute to your roof’s longevity and overall condition.
Well, it’s time to give your roof a little more thought! The major cause of roof problems is a poorly maintained roof. As the part of your house that takes the most abuse, your roof requires regular inspection, maintenance, and repair. With proper and regular maintenance, your roof can last an average of 15 to 30 years.

You always want your home to look good both inside and out, but often you forget about what’s above your head – the roof! Your roof is an important curb appeal item that your neighbors and potential buyers will notice right away. As anyone in real estate can tell you, a beautiful exterior can make or break a home sale.
Without a well-maintained roof, several potential problems can arise that really affect the way your roof looks and also impact the curb appeal of your home. Clogged gutters can cause rain and snow to not drain properly, possibly ruining landscape as well as the gutters themselves. Roof algae can prematurely age your roof and cause ugly black streaks. Curled and damaged shingles can give your roof a worn and aged appearance. And there are many more potential problems which can impact your curb appeal negatively.

Most homeowners are concerned primarily with having their roof protect all the valuable things under it. But the roof itself is important because it adds sizeable value to your home, especially if you are considering selling in the future.
Home inspectors usually make a beeline for the roof when they come to appraise your property, because the health of a roof is a big factor in determining a home’s value. A new or updated roof will usually offer an excellent return on investment as it vastly improves the overall “health” of a home.
If you’re selling your home and the roof obviously needs repair, it can be a big negative on the appraisal value of the property. Your home might be considered a “fixer upper” if the roof looks like it’s not up to standard. And it could also mean a reduced price offer if the buy anticipates having to do costly roof repairs later. And worst case scenario, your roof could actually kill the sale altogether.
Doing regular roof maintenance and repairs and even replacing your roof, if necessary, can ensure that your house puts its best foot forward when it comes time to sell. Contact Royal Crown Roofing to learn more about the steps you can take now to protect your roof and value of your home. We look forward to discussing your roofing needs and sharing our expertise with you. You can expect only the best when you choose Royal Crown Roofing.

As a homeowner, you have a good idea of when something in your house needs work. Broken or missing shingles are easy to spot, for example. But not every problem is so visible. For a closer inspection to find less obvious issues with your roof, it’s best to call in the professionals for a roof inspection.
You may be considering a roof inspection as a precursor to selling your home, or you simply believe your roof needs some work. Whatever the case, we’re here to help you out with a free professional roof inspection! Here’s what you can expect when you schedule a visit from our contractors.
Questions & Concerns from the Homeowner
When the contractor first arrives, they’ll want to know about any questions you have for them. This is your chance to highlight concerns you may have or potential problems you’ve spotted in your roof. This gives the inspector an idea of where to start looking. Additionally, establishing a good rapport with your roof inspector ensures you’ll enjoy good service throughout the whole process.
Interior & Exterior Roof Review
The inspector will examine both the inside and outside of your roof, looking for the problems you’ve noticed before and any other issues that need to be addressed. They’ll check the insulation, sealants around vents, your gutter system, and more to identify any potential problems you may not have noticed. They’ll even check the structure of your roof itself for rotting or damage that could cause a collapse.
Pro Tip: If you notice broken or missing shingles on your roof, don’t walk on the roof to repair them! The leak that has likely formed could have damaged the structure of the roof and you could fall.
Damage Report
Once the inspection is over, the contractor will discuss their findings with you. You’ll have a clear picture of the condition of your roof and any work that it needs. You may even be able to receive an estimated cost of the required repairs. Regardless of the extent of work needed, by the end of the inspection, you’ll have a detailed report of the inspector’s findings.
Your Next Steps
So now your roof has been assessed by a professional and you know the extent of repairs needed. If you’re about to sell your home, send this report to the prospective buyers so they know what they’re getting. Otherwise, why wait for repairs? Give us a call to get an estimate for the work your roof needs.

A well-built roof is designed to last for decades and to withstand all sorts of bad weather. However, sometimes you’ll notice your roof seems to need some attention. Can you identify which problems can wait for a little and which ones need immediate roof repair?
Inspecting Your Roof
While a professional roofing contractor must make the final decision, you as the homeowner can definitely learn to identify problem areas on your roof. And the less time you have to deal with a faulty or leaky roof, the better! Here are several issues that require immediate, professional roof repair:
- Broken or missing shingles
- Algae growth
- Open seams or leaks
- Rotting structural supports
- Pest infestations
1) Broken or Missing Shingles
The most common and most easily visible problem your roof could have is broken or missing shingles. The issue here is obvious. Any break in the shingle layer can let in rain, causing water damage to the lower layers of your roof and potentially causing the structure itself to falter. If you notice missing shingles on your roof, do your best to temporarily patch the hole and call your local roofing contractor immediately.
Pro Tip: If you suspect your roof is leaking, go into the attic and check the roof interior for dark, damp spots around potentially problematic areas.
2) Algae Growth
Algae or mold forming on your roof is also a bad sign. Not only does this indicate a pretty severe buildup of dirt, but plant growth on your roof can also eat away at your shingles and drastically decrease the lifespan of your roofing materials. Schedule a professional roof cleaning session as soon as possible if you notice algae on the shingles.
3) Open Seams or Leaks
Broken shingles aren’t the only ways leaks can form in your roof. Caulking around your chimney, windows, or air vents can break down with time and allow wind and rain into your house. You may notice dark, damp spots forming around these spots if a leak is occurring. Like broken shingles, this requires fast attention. Cover the leak as best you can and call your roof repair company.
4) Rotting Structural Supports
If you don’t catch a leak in time, you could find that the very structure of your roof is compromised. Support beams might be wet or rotting and the roof deck could be deteriorating. Either is a serious problem that threatens to collapse into your house, damaging your property and driving up repair costs. Let us handle this emergency roof repair and get your house back in shape immediately.
5) Pest Infestations
Bugs, squirrels, or other critters may be making their homes in your roof. While this may seem harmless, pests can make existing holes larger or chew new holes in your roof so they can hide inside. Worst of all, if they make it past the roof and into your home, you’ll have an entirely new set of problems to deal with. Get pests removed before they damage your roof any further.
Identifying Common Roof Problems
Roof damages are nothing to be ignored or put off until it’s too late. A leaky or damaged roof could harm your home’s overall structure. Don’t delay! If you see signs that your roof needs repair, call your local roofing contractor as soon as possible.

Are you in the process of getting your roof repaired? Do words like “gable” or “truss” sound like a foreign language? Understanding roofing terms and how they work together in your roof system will help you make sense of the repair estimates given by roofing contractors.
Defining Important Parts of a Roof
Being able to identify the different parts of a car is comparable to your roof. If you’re unsure of how the crankshaft relates to the engine, a car diagnosis could be confusing. The same is true for the roof of your home. Becoming familiar with common roofing terms listed on estimates or inspections will help you take better care of your roof.
- Decking
- Drip Edge
- Flashing
- Gable
- Ridge Vent
- Saddle
- Shingles
- Truss
- Underlayment
- Valley
- Vent Pipe
1) Decking
The roof deck is the layer of roofing material between the frame of your roof and the outer roof shingles or coating. Besides the trusses and joints that make up the roof frame, your decking is the primary foundation of your roof. Types of deck material include steel, concrete, cement, and wood.
2) Drip Edge
Drip edges are metal sheets, usually shaped like an “L”, that are placed at the edge of your roof. Contractors install these metal sheets to direct water away from the fascia (roof edge) and into the gutter system. Older homes may not drip edges installed, but it is now required for all new homes to include drip edges in their roof systems.
3) Flashing
Flashing is the term used to define materials that are placed in specific areas on your roof to protect against leaks. Usually made of rust-resistant metal, flashing is the best way to weatherproof your home. Similar terms may include base flashing, counter flashing, step flashing, or valley flashing. Each relates to the spot on the roof where the metal strip will be installed.
4) Gable
A gable roof is the most common roof shape when thinking about roof types. The gable is the triangular portion of your roof where the edges of roof sections intersect. Similarly, a gable wall or gable end refers to the gable and wall directly underneath.
5) Ridge Vent
Compared to turbines, ridge vents are the preferred method for allowing hot, humid air out of your attic. A ridge vent is installed along the top of each roof peak and acts as a screen for interior air flow. While allowing hot air to escape from the attic, it keeps outside elements from leaking in.
6) Saddle
A cricket or saddle on your roof primarily concerns the installation of chimneys. To divert water running down the chimney to your roofing material, a ridge structure (saddle) is installed around the high side of the chimney.
7) Shingles
Usually thought of as the most popular roofing material, shingles compose the outer layer of your roof. Otherwise known as asphalt or fiberglass shingles, each home’s shingles range in color, material, and shape. Roofing contractors nail each shingle together in an interlacing pattern to ensure long term durability for your home.
Pro Tip: There are numerous shingle types to choose from your home. Be sure to coordinate the appropriate roofing material with your home’s exterior design.
8) Truss
The truss of your roof is your roof frame. Usually built away from the building site, a roof truss consists of three interlocking parts: rafters, joists, and jacks. In today’s new homes, you can find a number of different roof truss styles such as dual pitch, inverted, flat, and hip roofs.
9) Underlayment
The underlayment of your roof is a waterproof barrier placed between your roof deck and shingle material. Although shingles are your first defense against water damage, underlayment provides extra protection in case of missing shingles. A roofing underlayment can be found in there different materials including asphalt-saturated felt, synthetic, and rubberized asphalt.
10) Valley
Your roof valleys refer to the parts where your sloped roof meets, usually forming a V angle where water runs off. Depending on the design of your roof, there are three different types of valleys including woven, closed, and open valleys. It’s important to inspect your roof valleys periodically to guard against unwanted water damage.
11) Vent Pipe
Did you know plumbing has a part in your roof’s design? A vent pipe is an air pipe installed on the roof of your home to allow gases and odors to escape from your plumbing lines.
