Maintaining your roof is an essential part of homeownership, and sometimes, it may be tempting to try to handle repairs yourself. While some smaller issues can be tackled with a bit of DIY know-how, it’s important to know when it’s time to call in the professionals. Here are some dos and don’ts of DIY roof repair, and when it’s best to hire a professional roofing company like Royal Crown Roofing.
Do: Inspect Your Roof Regularly
One of the most important things you can do to maintain your roof is to inspect it regularly. This means looking for signs of damage, such as missing or damaged shingles, cracks, or leaks. By catching issues early on, you can often prevent them from becoming bigger problems down the line.
Don’t: Attempt Complex Repairs Without Professional Help
While some minor repairs, such as replacing a missing shingle, can be done by a DIYer with the right tools and experience, complex repairs should always be left to the professionals. This includes issues such as leaks in your roof’s flashing, which can be difficult to detect and even more difficult to repair.
Do: Use Proper Safety Equipment
When working on your roof, safety should be your top priority. This means using proper safety equipment, such as a sturdy ladder, safety harnesses, and non-slip shoes. It’s also important to work on your roof during calm weather conditions to minimize the risk of accidents.
Don’t: Use Improper Materials
When attempting DIY roof repairs, it’s important to use the proper materials for the job. Using the wrong materials can not only result in a shoddy repair job but can also cause additional damage to your roof.
Do: Call in the Professionals When in Doubt
If you’re unsure about the extent of the damage to your roof or feel uncomfortable attempting repairs on your own, it’s best to call in the professionals. A reputable roofing company like Royal Crown Roofing can assess the damage and provide you with a quote for repairs.
In conclusion, while some minor roof repairs can be tackled by a DIYer, it’s important to know your limits and when it’s best to call in the professionals. By inspecting your roof regularly, using proper safety equipment, and using the right materials, you can help prevent damage and prolong the life of your roof. And when in doubt, don’t hesitate to call in a trusted roofing company like Royal Crown Roofing to handle the job.

If your roof suffered from our Houston area’s incredibly hot summer of 2022, or our more recent, lower-than-freezing temperatures, it may need replacing. Its age may also give an indicator that its time has come.
For most of us, our home is our biggest investment, and we need to protect that investment. Not only will you improve its curb appeal, but you will also improve its value when you give it a new roof. And it also will offer you and your family greater protection against any windstorms, hailstorms, rain storms, or hurricanes in our future.
If your roof has been damaged, water can leak into your house and appear in your attic, in bedrooms, in the kitchen, in the garage — in other words, anywhere under your roof. It can even hide inside the roof, and do amazing damage without you even knowing it.
Contact Royal Crown Roofing for their expert assistance. They will check it out and make recommendations about putting a new roof on your home. They will make sure you get the protection you need against whatever Houston area bad weather that’s on its way.
by royalcrownroofing | Jan 6, 2023 | Gutters, Roof Inspection, Roof Maintenance
Gutters are pathways for water to flow off and away from your roof to protect it and your home. They lead the water to predesignated destinations that save your home from the damage the water can do to it, if the water is left there. If not for the gutters, the water can settle in your roof and eat away at it, causing rot and mold growth. Not only that, but animals and insects will make their homes in such spots, creating further damage.
Clean gutters that function properly are a must for a clean, dry home. If they are filled with leaves, twigs, birds’ nests, or any other debris, water will be left to pool on the roof and all this debris will rot and eventually fall off your roof in lumps, and do damage to the sides of your home. As this happens, the value of your home will decrease, as will its curb appeal.
But, perhaps worst of all, when water can’t drain off the roof, it will find its own pathways through your roof, rotting it and causing crevices where it can drain through your ceilings and down the walls inside your home. Of course, repairing all this will cost a pretty penny.
Don’t underestimate the value of your gutters. Be sure to keep them in good shape and contact Royal Crown Roofing when they are in need of repair or replacement.

Our humidity here in the Houston area offers the perfect environment for a roof-destroying aquatic plant called algae. You’ve probably noticed it when you’ve been camping. It’s that greenish plant that grows in damp areas out in the woods under shady trees, and it especially thrives in our heat and high humidity combination.
A soft wind can blow spores onto your roof and then the humidity and rain will spur them into growth, and they will spread quickly. Further complicating the situation are leaves, branches and debris in the gutters and on the roof, keeping water from draining off it, and creating the perfect moist atmosphere for the growing algae.
Commonly, the type of algae growing on roofs is Gloeocapsa magma, which thrives on water and causes black stains, or what looks like mold, but it can also appear to be green moss spreading across the roof. It needs food to survive, and it feeds on some of the materials found inside your roof. It will grow inside shingles, flashing and gutters, resulting in damage that will lead to water leaking into your home, and the destruction of your roof’s protection from the sun’s dangerous UV rays.
Royal Crown Roofing’s expert roofers can help you recognize what’s growing on your roof with a free roof inspection. Then they can help you with a deep cleaning to repair the situation. Contact them.

It’s time to prepare for whatever comes this winter – it could even be freezing, icy weather, just like a couple of years ago. Winterizing your home calls for checking out your roof’s status.
Here are some things that need to be done:
All that debris that landed on your roof this past summer needs to be cleaned off – all those leaves, twigs, children’s toys, bird’s nests, etc.
Your gutters need debris cleaned out, too, in order to prevent dams that keep the water from draining off your roof.
If you have tree branches overhanging your roof, you need to hire someone to trim them back to avoid them being blown into your roof during one of our fierce Texas storms.
The flashing around chimneys, vents, pipes, dormers and skylights need to be checked for damage. If it’s loose, or the calk has cracked, get it repaired. These are perfect spots to develop leaks.
Your attic needs checking out for water-damage, or cracks in the roof caused by rodents or birds that have invaded and taken up residence.
Contact Royal Crown Roofing for a free roof inspection, and they will do all the above tasks (except for the tree-trimming) for you, so you don’t have to risk climbing up on the roof yourself. They will be happy to make sure all is in good shape for the coming winter.

Are you prepared for the onslaught of hailstorms, windstorms, (perhaps even snowstorms) this winter, and the scorching sun next summer?
Whatever the weather, cracked or broken shingles on your roof means it isn’t healthy, and it won’t protect you and your family from the extremes of hot and cold that will hit us sometimes here in the Houston area. Does that mean you need a whole new roof if you have damaged shingles? Not unless the damage is extensive.
Shingles can be damaged by thermal expansion, causing both splitting and cracking. But splitting and cracking are different problems. Splitting occurs when the layers in the shingle separate and expand with the temperature when it rises, and then contract when the temperature goes back down. Eventually, the shingle tears and comes apart, leading to leaks in your home.
Another type of damage to shingles usually occurs with regular wear and tear. It’s called cracking, and the damage is more shallow, creating small tears on the surface of the shingle.
Split shingles, the more dangerously damaged shingles, need replacing because they can lead to pathways for large leaks in your home. Cracked shingles, in contrast, simply need filling in the cracks. Since it’s obviously cheaper to repair or replace a couple of shingles, rather than the whole roof, you need to be on the ball in making sure repairs are done expeditiously whenever your shingles are damaged to avoid greater problems.
Royal Crown Roofing offers you a free roof inspection to check out what needs to be done whether it’s a repair job or a roof replacement. Contact them for help.
