Concrete tile roofs, much like clay tile are often seen as an aesthetically pleasing choice when compared to shingles, wood, and other roofing materials. Concrete roof tiles have the benefit of being naturally fire resistant and long-lasting, with these tiles being able to last anywhere between 30 and 50 years. Unfortunately, like all other roofing options, concrete tiles do come with their own unique set of problems and repair requirements.
A major problem we see with concrete roof tiles is the underqualified roofers who are hired to install them. Since concrete tiles are heavier than other alternatives, they require stronger support structures. When an owner decides to change the roof from shingles to roof tiles, many roofers neglect to strengthen the underlyting roof structure which will cause sections of the roof to collapse.
Two other disadvantages concrete tiles have when compared to clay tiles is worse colorfastness and less physical durability. The color of a clay tile will not fade or discolor over time. The same cannot be said of concrete tiles. Concrete tile will never hold its color as well as clay, Well made concrete tiles should last a long time, up to 50 years. By contrast, many clay tile roofs are still waterproof after a century of service. Traditional clay, although comparatively easy to break, does not weaken from exposure to the elements.
The main advantage concrete holds over clay is cost. They cost about half as much as clay.
With a wide variety of sizes, colors, finishes, and shapes to choose from including shakes, shingles, simulated wood and slate look-a-likes, concrete tile offers a fire-proof, permanent roofing option with a gorgeous durability.
